Alexius became emperor at a tense time for the Empire. There were attacks from all sides.

The Seljuks remained in Anatolia. Although the major cities still had Byzantine rulers, the Seljuk had taken many valuable land. The stable border between the Byzantines and the Muslims was broken as well.

Pagans were forcing the Byzantines to let them settle in the Empire in the north.

The Normans emerged from the West planning a full-scale invasion of Byzantine lands.

These external threats drew Alexius to request external help to the West.

This was action not taken lightly, Greek Christians still had the idea of West Christians of being barbaric occupying Roman territory. Despite this, Alexius's lack of troops lead him to Pope Urban II in 1095.
