1 gen 63 anni a. C. - Siege of Jerusalem
Descrizione:
In 63 BC, Pompey the Great intervened in the dispute over the Hasmonean Kingdom's throne, leading to the siege of Jerusalem. The conflict arose between Hyrcanus II and Aristobulus II following their mother's death. Advised by Antipater the Idumean, Hyrcanus sought aid from King Aretas III of Nabataea. Despite initial successes for Aristobulus, Pompey's arrival in Damascus shifted the tide. Aristobulus's refusal to yield led to a Roman siege. Pompey's forces breached the city after three months, with heavy casualties on the Jewish side. Pompey entered the Temple, desecrating its Holy of Holies. Following the conquest, Judea lost its independence, becoming a client kingdom of Rome under Hyrcanus II's rule. The kingdom ceded territory and paid tribute, marking the end of Hasmonean autonomy and the incorporation of Judea into the Roman Republic's sphere of influence.
