The return to Zion, recorded in Ezra-Nehemiah of the Hebrew Bible, marks the liberation of the Jews of the Kingdom of Judah from Babylonian captivity following the Persian conquest of Babylon. In 539 BCE, Cyrus the Great issued the Edict of Cyrus, allowing Jews to return to Jerusalem and the Land of Judah, which became a self-governing Jewish province under Persian rule. Around 50,000 Jews initially returned to Judah after Cyrus's decree, while others remained in Babylon. Over the next 110 years, additional exiles returned to Judah, an event known as the return to Zion, which has inspired Jews ever since.
