The Byzantine empire was in disarray after several years of incompetent leadership. Additionally, the Muslims in the East were a loaming threat. The Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX invited the Pope to send representatives for a discussion for a military alliance. The Pope chose the Greek hating Humbert who was jailed by the patriarch of Constantinople. They both excommunicated each other leading to the Church being spilt between the western Latin church and eastern Greek church.

Both sides disagreed on how Christian values were depicted.
