26 magg 1955 anni - 1955 election

Descrizione:

Churchill resigned in April and deputy Prime Minister-Anthony Eden-took position as Prime Minister. He immediately called a general election.

The Tories had reason to be confident. Churchill had given the public a prosperous Britain with the removal of war rationing, a building plan going beyond target and R.A.Butler creating tax cuts. Additionally, Labour was divided and Atlee was becoming an old leader.

The Conservative manifesto focused heavily on why people shouldn't vote for Labour. Arguing that the government will fall to the left if Labour was in power.

The Labour manifesto did not promise much expect for the removal of NHS prescription charges and the 11-plus exam.

Conservative- 345 seats, 49.7%
Labour-277 seats, 46.4%

Conservatives won by a majority of 58 seats.

Although proven a good leader when Churchill was away, Eden was not a confident fit for a Prime Minister. His knowledge and experience in the economy and domestic affairs was limited. His weakness can be seen in how he moved Macmillan from Foreign Office to Treasury. However Macmillian managed to delay this change for 2 months.
