Descrizione:

1. The bomb was codenamed 'Little Boy'. It weighed 4.4 tonnes. It caused a huge fireball 280 metres in diameter. The core temperature was more than 1,000,000 degrees Celsius.

2. The bombing is estimated to have killed 140,000 people. It was dropped by the US in order to get Japan to quickly surrender, limiting loss of life.

3. The initial hit list included five cities, and Nagasaki was not one of them. It replaced Kyoto, as the US Secretary of War was apparently fond of it as he spent his honeymoon there.

4. Before the atomic attacks, the US dropped pamphlets over Japan, stating that the citizens should flee and promising 'prompt and proper destruction'.

5. It was declared that nothing would grow in Hiroshima for 75 years, although merely one month later the oleander flower bloomed. It is now the official flower of Hiroshima.
