5 nov 1605 anni - Gunpowder Plot
Descrizione:
Robert Catesby led a plot to blow up Parliament in session, because they wanted to restore Catholicism in England. The explosion was prevented because Lord Monteagle received a warning letter from one of the plotters who was his relative. The government waited 10 days to search for the gunpowder, finding Guy Fawkes with it on 4th November. Fawkes was arrested and tortured to reveal the other plotters on 5th November. They were all beheaded.
There is a conspiracy theory that the king's spymaster, Robert Cecil, had set up the plot to increase James I's popularity and hatred towards Catholics. This would explain why the government had waited so long to search for the gunpowder. The trial of the plotters was only 30 minutes long and had no defence.
