Descrizione:

- After the Mughals raided on Hooghly, Job Charnock --> negotiated to return place called Sutanuti
- A zamindar called Sobha Singh rebelled giving the English the pretext they were looking for, to fortify their settlement in Sutsnti in 1696
- In 1698, English succeeded in getting the permission to but the zamindari of the 3 villages of Sutanti, Gobindpur and Kalikata from their owners on payment of Rs 1200
- The fortified settlement was named Fort William in year 1700 when it became the seat of the Eastern presidency i.e Calcutta with Sir Charles Eyre as its 1st President
