At the end of 1968, a new president was elected for the US called Richard Nixon, and from 1969 to 1973 he worked alongside his secretary to remove the US from the Vietnamese war, as it was becoming obvious that the war was not working out. However, they did not want to give Vietnam away to communism none the less so they used a range of strategies:

- Improved relations with China and the USSR. In 1969, china and the USSR fell out and it seemed possible for a war between them. As a result, the USSR, China, and the US tried to resolve relations between them

- Vietnamization, which was the act of giving responsibility to South Vietnam and slowly withdrawing the US troops

- Peace negotiations with North Vietnam, from early 1969 Nixon's secretary held regular meetings with the chief Vietnamese peace negotiator

By 1973, all US troops had left Vietnam. Unfortunately, 2 years later, South Vietnam fell into communism. After 30 years of conflict, the communists won.


Whose fault was it that the US lost?

US: bad tactics, relied on firepower (expensive), poor soldiery

Other: No help from allies, cost of everything within the war, terrain (US soldiers were not used to it), aid from China


Why did the US lose the Vietnam war?

Bad US tactics:
- Napalm, chemical weapons
- Operation Rolling Thunder
- Search and destroy missions (My Lai)
- Never invaded the north
- Poor US soldiery
- Not used to the terrain

Good Viet Cong tactics:
- tunnels
- traps
- hard to find (no unifotm)
