28 ottob 1982 anni - Employment Act 1982

Descrizione:

Another one of Thatcher's aim was to remove power from trade unions. After the defeat of Heath and Callaghan's government, the question of how much power trade unions had over government enacting policies stirred in government. There was also alleged ties to high inflation and trade unions.

Nevertheless, James Prior passed the Employment Act of 1980 which outlawed Secondary picketing- picketing outside companies suppliers rather than the target company-and narrowed the closed shop- a place where only trade union members could be employed.

Prior's successor, Norman Tebbit only added to this with the his Employment Act 1982 which:
Made it harder for companies to fire people for not being in a trade union,
Made companies making contracts with companies in which all members are trade union members illegal,
Made it legal to fire someone for striking,
Narrowed the what counts as a legal strike,
Made it possible to sue trade unions and trade union officals for illegal striking.
