After the death of Muhammad in 632, there was a period of conflict in the Muslim world as the succeeding leadership of the religion was debated. In 660/661 the Umayyads emerged as the second Caliphate and first Muslim dynasty. It ruled the Islamic world until 750, during which time the Christian world and Byzantium lost much of their hold over the Mediterranean. The conquest of this territory occurred through military conquest, but once the rule of Islam was established in a region, Christians were mostly free to continue with their lives. Though they were allowed to keep their religion, the political interference of Muslim rulers often disturbed the Church's ability to govern itself. The Umayyads continued in power in Spain until 1031, but their reign was overthrown in the Arabic world by the second Muslim Dynasty, the Abbasids (750-1258).
