Muhammad (570-632) grew up in the trading hub Mecca, which. was ruled by the tribe of Quraysh. In 595 he married a rich widow named Khadijah who gave him the opportunity to experience the many religions and cultures that passed through Mecca. Uncertain of which religion he should choose, Muhammad started the religion of Islam after having visions in 610. Islam is a monotheistic and Abrahamic religion that swept across the Arabian Peninsula, by means of military conquest, before the death of Muhammad in 632. It spread still further after his death and posed a significant threat to the dominance of Christianity in the eastern Mediterranean.
