The Bastille was a royal prison that the poor urban classes of Paris stormed in order to amass weapons to defend Paris. The people feared that the king's troops that had gathered in Paris were going to attack them, so they gathered weapons and ammunition to protect themselves in case that happened. This event signified the revolutionary fervor overtaking France.
