9 giug 1983 anni - 1983 Election

Descrizione:

Labour's manifesto was dubbed "the longest suicide not in history".
The manifesto promised renationalising companies that had been privatised, ending council housing and withdrawal form the EEC.
The Conservative manifesto promised reduction in inflation, reduction in public expenditure, privatisation and lower taxes. The Tories were backed by Thatcher's winning of the Falkland wars.

Compared to the Conservatives, the Labour manifesto appeared to be promising higher taxes and more spending. The Conservatives were promising more money.

The Conservative's majority was significantly higher than the 1979 election, however the percentage of votes was not.

Labour was slit into the SDP. This greatly benefited the Conservatives practically cutting the oppositional votes in half, resulting in a Conservative victory.
Votes:
Conservative: 43%
Labour: 28%
SDP: 25%
Other: 4%
Conservative majority: 144 seats

Despite the vicotory at the Falklands war, the splitting of the Labour party benefited the Conservatives more.
