Throughout the 19th century, the Kingdom of Sardinia, centered around Turin in the North West of Italy would spearhead attempts at Italian unification. Allying with France and later Prussia, and through the diplomacy of Cavour and the patriotic fervor of the firebrand Garibaldi, they would eventually come to conquer all Italian lands outside of the Papal States. Malta and Corsica which were sometimes claimed remained British and French possessions, while the Pope refused to be subjugated by or lose his territory to, the encroaching Italian Kingdom.

Nonetheless in 1861 the Kingdom of Italy would be declared and in 1871 Rome would fall to the Italian Army and be declared the capital of Italy.
