The first person to be crowned "Tsar of all Russia" Ivan began his rise to power as the Grand Prince of Moscow. His grip on power was maintained through bloody purges of his opponents, real and imagined.

While this time would see the creation of a Russian Empire and began to bring Russia to the world's attention, it would also involve bloody and devastating wars which devastated the Russian people and economy in the long term.

It is generally accepted that in one such fit of anger he murdered his son and heir, also named Ivan. This was after (allegedly) attacking his daughter-in-law and causing her miscarriage. Ultimately this would lead to chaos within the family and by extension, Russia, leading to the "Time of Troubles" and the end of his dynasty.
