Likely the pre-eminent Regency era author and one of the most popular writers of all time, Jane Austen was little-known in her own lifetime.

Writing anonymously, with her books published as written by "A Lady" it would only be after her death that her identity and status was cemented. Her brother revealed her identity in the foreword to Persuasion and Northanger Abbey which were released posthumously in 1817.

While respected in her own time, including by the Prince-Regent, her works would only reach legendary status in the years after her death. For her own life, she is said to have spent most of her time around her family, never marrying, and dying in 1817 at 41.
