1 gen 1823 anni - Elizabeth Fry

Descrizione:

Born into a Quaker family, Elizabeth Fry grew up at a time of considerable political changes and reforms in British life, not least of which was the growth of the abolitionist movement.

Having more deeply religious sensibilities than many others in her family, she became convinced of her duty to help those less fortunate, focusing on prisoners, by the time of her early thirties. She visited numerous prisons and was shocked to discover the severity of the issues at stake as cramped, harshly-governed, corrupt and brutal prisons were maintained.

With a particular interest in protecting women from sexual violence within prison, she authored numerous reforms which she encouraged prisoners to vote on, and these reforms were ultimately adopted in many other institutions. Most significant was the mandated segregation of prisons by sex in 1823. She was supported in this by the royal families of Britain, Prussia and Russia, who took an interest in her work.

She would also devote much of her life to the homeless, nurses and the abolition of slavery.
