A semitic-speaking people in the Ancient Near East, the Canaanites were resident to the Southern Levant in what are now Israel, Palestine. They would become famous for their sea-faring abilities and great trading power.

Known to the Greeks as "Phoenicians" they would go on to create many colonies around the Mediterranean. First among these was Carthage, in what is now Tunisia, the nemesis of the Roman Republic throughout the 3rd century.

Those who remained would g on to form numerous groups and tribes including the Israelites, the Philistines and the Samaritans.
