Despite a fierce struggle to claim the throne in a bloody war against the King of Portugal, with the aid of her husband the King of Aragon and their union would see Spain be united into effectively one kingdom.

She secured her hold of the kingdom, stabilising it and ensuring peace during a chaotic time, talking down and subduing rebellious elements while also finishing the reconquista by conquering the Emirate of Granada, the last Muslim state in Spain.

In an effort to secure her grip on these newly conquered territories, and the loyalty of her subjects, she established the Spanish Inquisition and pursued both criminals and blasphemers with equal zeal.

Her reign would also see the first steps in Spanish colonization of the New World as she was the patron of Columbus and financed his expeditions, beginning the Spanish Empire.

All this made Spain a major power in Europe, and began the Spanish Golden Age.
