After Rome destroyed Jerusalem including the great temple there in 70 AD and Hadrian later forbade Jews access to Jerusalem in 136 AD, thousands of Jews left to move to other parts of the empire and beyond the empire's borders. Over the centuries these communities would remain, as far apart as Portugal and Poland or further still.
