Cavour knew that by itself Piedmont would never be powerful enough to defeat Austria and unite the Northern provinces in Italy. Therefore in 1855, he sent Piedmontese troops to assist Great Britain and France in the Crimean War in order to gain their support/military assistance in defeating Austria and unifying Northern Italy. There is also a Cholera outbreak and thousands die. Cavour attempts to isolate Austria on the International stage
