A new strand of influenza was brought into Omaio when “two men were sent from Maraenui to Ōpōtiki to get whiskey and cakes for a dance to be held at Maraenui that evening”. After the men went to 'gather supplies', the community and themselves were now exposed to the deadly strain of the flu.
