The election of 1860 is perhaps one of the most important elections in US history. Southern states believed Lincoln and the Republican party were going to end the institution of slavery. Slavery provided the economic backbone of the southern economy. Additionally, southern states were outraged Lincoln won the election when he did not appear on southern ballots. So with the election of Lincoln many southern states suceeded from the Union.
