Benjamin Franklin opened this school which helped focus on math, navigation, astronomy, bookkeeping, logic, and rhetoric (so the needs of colonial America) and was one of the first schools to set aside religion as its main focus which would help inspire the secular public education system currently. Additionally students were given options from courses to choose from which helped create the precedent for electives and alternate programs in middle and high schools seen today.
