WAGNER mercenaries have blamed Vladimir Putin for the assassination of their leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in a plane crash - and issued him with a chilling threat of vengeance.

The Russian president last night offered 'sincere condolences' over his former ally's death. But Wagner fighters had already posted a video in which they told him: 'There's a lot of talk right now about what the Wagner Group will do. We can tell you one thing. We are getting started, get ready for us.'

Prigozhin, 62 - who led a failed revolt against Putin in

June - is said to have died with his deputy Dmitry Ukin, five officials and three crew when the private Embraer jet dropped out of the sky and exploded in a fireball 60 miles north of Moscow.

After 24 hours of silence, Putin called his former chef and friend - who became a billionaire thanks to their links - a 'talented businessman'.

But intelligence experts say he is almost certainly behind the attack.
