6 lugl 1864 anni - PE: Transfer of Northern Territory

Descrizione:

“A significant change has occurred in the political map of Australia, as the vast northern territory formerly belonging to New South Wales has been transferred to the control of South Australia. New South Wales had little interest or ability in managing its northern territory, which has remained largely unexplored and unsettled. The transfer was effected apon a request from the South Australian government and there new territory extends from the 26th parallel of south latitude to the Indian Ocean, and from the 129th meridian of east longitude to the 138th meridian.
South Australian leadership had long held interest in exploring and colonising the northern reaches, which are believed to be rich in natural resources and there have been several expeditions. One such was led by John McDouall Stuart, who crossed the continent from south to north in 1862. The only settlement of note in the north is Port Darwin, which was named for naturalist Charles Darwin."
