The Battle of Gaugamela was fought on October 1, 331 BC, between the forces of Alexander the Great and the Persian Army under King Darius III. It was the second and final battle between the two kings, and is considered to be the final blow to the Achaemenid Empire, resulting in its complete conquest by Alexander.
The battle took place on the plain of Gaugamela, near the city of Arbela (modern-day Irbil, Iraq). Alexander's army was outnumbered by the Persians, but he was able to outmaneuver them and win a decisive victory. Darius III fled the battle and was never seen again.
The Battle of Gaugamela was a turning point in history. It marked the end of the Achaemenid Empire and the beginning of the Hellenistic period. Alexander went on to conquer much of the known world, and his empire spread Greek culture and ideas throughout the Middle East.
