Progress Rail is retrofitting one of the 120 existing Class 4000 GT42CU AC diesel-electric loco into a battery-electric loco for Aurizon, Australia’s largest rail freight company.

This first step towards Aurizon’s net-zero objective by 2050 consists in removing the diesel engine, tank, alternator… and installing 4.5 MWh of battery capacity.

The design phase and preliminary work on the retrofit has commenced at Redbank. Construction of the locomotive is expected to be complete by early 2025, with on-track trials commencing in the first half of 2025. The charging infrastructure on the selected Australian rail corridor will be completed concurrently
