Irenaues was a student of Polycarp, and was prominent opponent of Gnosticism. He is also the first to list all four gospel accounts as essential to canon.

The exact nature of Irenaues' death is uncertain. Some believe he was martyred during the reign of Emperor Septimus Severus, while others say he simply died of old age; he was about 80 years old.
