Polycarp was an old man at the time of his arrest; he was arrested for refusing to burn incense to the emperor and proclaiming that Caesar is Lord. Polycarp remained faithful, stating, "Eighty-six years I have served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How then can I blaspheme my King and Savior? You threaten me with a fire that burns for a season, and after a little while is quenched; but you are ignorant of the fire of everlasting punishment that is prepared for the wicked." He was sentenced to burn at the stake, but upon seeing that the flames did not kill him, the soldiers stabbed him to death with a spear.

According to Irenaus, Tertullian, and Jerome, Polycarp was mentored by John the Apostle, and was appointed as bishop of Smyrna.
