Napoleons famous long march on Moscow ends just outside with the battle for Borodino. despite massive losses on both sides, the battle is inconclusive, and it is only the russian obstinate refusal to give in even after the burning of moscow that makes napoleon stay on too long, losing 80% of his force to the russian winter.
