Hydrogen freight locomotive: Canadian Pacific and CSX step up retrofit efforts

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and CSX Corporation have announced their intention to form a joint venture to build and deploy kits to convert diesel locomotives to hydrogen.

In North America, hydrogen is on the move. While the province of Quebec recently celebrated the first tests of Alstom's Coradia iLint train, a growing number of players are also interested in retrofitting. The latest announcement is that Canadian Pacific has joined forces with CSX to launch a joint venture dedicated to the subject.

The unnamed joint venture will start by converting one of CSX's diesel locomotives using a hydrogen conversion kit developed by Canadian Pacific. The conversion process will take place at CSX's workshops in Huntington, West Virginia.
