The first revolt, Mazzini organized from Marseilles, should have broken out in Piedmont, where he had carried out a great propaganda action among the troops also through the newspaper La Giovine Italia. Due to a fight that took place between the soldiers in Savoy, the police arrested many of the conspirators, including many officers, the brothers Giovanni and Jacopo Ruffini, the lawyer Andrea Vochieri and the Turin abbot Vincenzo Gioberti. All underwent a trial by the military tribunal, and twelve were sentenced to death, including Vochieri, while Jacopo Ruffini, in order not to betray himself, killed himself in prison, others managed to save themselves by escaping
