In the days of reconstruction from the American Civil War, resistance to the remaking of the nation increased among white Southerners. In 1866, a group of white southerners created the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). This secret society opposed civil rights and brought suffrage to African Americans and Republican voters. This group wore white masks, usually with a point on the top, and white robes to hide their identities. The number of people in the group spread rapidly throughout the South. The Klan members would attack and murder people who publicly supported the Civil Rights Act. The KKK would do this in an act called lynching, which is killing somebody without trial. Victims of the attacks had little protection from the violence, even though military authorities were appointed to this problem. This is mainly due to the appointed military forces being against reconstruction, therefore ignoring the violence. This created a series of hate crimes throughout the 1870s and American History, especially in the 1950s and 1960s. The Ku Klux Klan is still around in the 2000s, but they are not as much of a threat today as they have been in the past.
