For the first three years, the patriots of the colonies were fighting the infamous British army alone, a significant feat, especially when both Hessians and American Indians were fighting on the side of the british. Against all odds, the rebellion survived much longer than anyone could have predicted. Eventually, with urging from Benjamin Franklin, France finally took the opportunity to weaken Britain, and decided to join forces with the American patriots. At first, they helped covertly, but when the Battle of Saratoga happened, the French finally accepted an alliance with the newly formed United States. During this alliance, the French supplied rations, ammunition, weapons, and, most importantly, a skilled army. One that could rival the British. Over the years, the Continental Army slowly became more and more of a skilled military force, but having the French on the American side was one of the deciding factors of the Revolutionary War.
