The Battle of Cowpens commenced on January 17, 1781. The Continental Army was backed up against the Broad River with scouts reporting British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton pursuing the Southern Continental Army, which was commanded by General Daniel Morgan. Morgan decided to retreat to the Broad River and make a stand at Cowpens. He also decided to send word for close-by militia to rendezvous at the well-known crossroads of Cowpens. Tarleton continued chasing Morgan’s army until he reached Cowpens and attacked head-on with his infamous dragoons, as was his normal battle strategy. Select American marksmen picked off British officers from behind trees, commencing the battle. They retreated to the front line of militia. Then they got off two volleys before retreating back to the Continental line set behind them. Suddenly, out of nowhere, William Washington’s patriot Cavalry rushed in and officially turned the tides in battle, the British Dragoons retreating, with a deadly patriot bayonet charge ending off the battle before the cavalry came around to surround the redcoats and win the battle for the future United States.
