1 gen 2016 anni - Viola Desmond on the $10 bill

Descrizione:

In 2016, Viola Desmond became the first Black woman on Canadian currency, being put on the Canadian $10 bill. In 1946 Viola Desmond protested racial segregation by staying in her seat in a theater in Nova Scotia when she was asked to move. She was taken to jail and then fined $25 over “tax evasion” because she hadn’t paid the extra one cent for the floor seat at the theater. There were protests by the Black community in Nova Scotia, but Viola Desmond died before this case was recognized as racial discrimination. In 2010 she was given a free pardon, and Justin Trudeau’s government made her the face of the $10 bill to commemorate her and to work for the rights of Black people in Canada. This improved the human rights for Black Canadians as it spread awareness about Black history and helped bring Viola Desmond to justice. It also recognized discrimination of the past which can help Canada work to discriminate less in the future.
