The Battle of Iwo Jima was an important battle in World War II. It was a battle for the island of Iwo Jima which the United States wanted to win from Japan because it allowed United States bombers to bomb the Japanese mainland. It consisted of 11 United States ships bombarding the island to try to weaken the Japanese defense, which consisted of major machine gun holes and other annoying and deadly consequences if the United States attempted to invade the island on foot. But due to unfortunate weather, the United States really didn't get a good opportunity to bombard the Japanese island. This caused the Marines and other Army soldiers to invade the island of Iwo Jima under heavy defense. The United States military had a hard time getting onto the beaches because there was a lot of volcanic ash covering the beaches. The United States had the call in bulldozers from the Navy to get rid of this and allow troops to storm the beaches. after many days of hard fighting the United States took the beaches and it was a strong spot for the rest of World War II. But this was a very costly battle that could have been avoided if the commanders of the United States Military listened to the Marines and other soldiers. Because they didn't do this they lost thousands more men than they should have.
