16 gen 1919 anni - 18th Amendment

Descrizione:

By the late 1800s, alcohol prohibition movements had shown up all over the United States. A good amount of them were led and controlled by religious groups of people who considered alcohol similar liquors and especially drunkenness a huge threat to the nation. The movements reached their peak in 1919, when congress ratified the 18th Amendment. This amendment banned manufacture, transportation, and sale of intoxicating liquors/alcohol. However, this proved extremely difficult to enforce and didn’t have the effect that was intended in the first place, which was eliminating crime and other problems branching off of the usage of alcohol. Instead, it caused a rise in organized crime and suspicious activities, as for which the revocation of alcohol became an increasingly lucrative operation. After extreme widespread public disapproval of the act, congress finally decided to respond in 1933, when it was repealed by the passing of the 21st Amendment, which let each state decide whether to permit the importation and sale of liquor on their own.
