The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in the history of the United States and even is considered one of the United States' worst natural disasters in general. It was caused by the flooding of the lower Mississippi Valley after several months of heavy rain. It caused around twenty-seven thousand square miles to be covered in up to thirty feet of water. All of this happened over the course of several months in early 1927. The damage was estimated to cost between two hundred forty-six million and one billion, which is worth between four point six billion and seventeen point three billion in 2023. About five hundred people died and about six hundred thirty thousand were affected directly. The aftermath left 750,000 people without food and water, clothing, or work. However, the flood brought about long-term social and political changes in the United States.
