Jazz originated in New Orleans. It specifically comes from a place called Congo Square, where slaves would gather and play music. This started before 1820, and it brought people from many countries all over the world together. each of them brought a bit of their county’s unique sound which was added into the music. Over time, marching bands were also introduced into the music, introducing brass instruments to many people and creating a genre called Ragtime. Spiritual music was also popular at the time of the Civil War and made its way into this music over time as well. After the Civil War, formerly enslaved people brought Blues to New Orleans which was the last component to be added to the music. In time, all these blended together to create the genre that became jazz. Overall, exactly when jazz began is a bit debated. Some feel it started in the 1800s or 1900s, but it ultimately rose to fame in 1920.
