"12 years a slave" was published by Solomon Northup.

Cause: Solomon was initially a free man; however, he was drugged in Washington, D.C. and sold into slavery. He wanted to share his experiences with the nation, therefore he began writing "12 Years a Slave."

Effect: Northup's perspective of a free, literary, and educated man being thrown into slavery shook the nation. It disturbed many readers more than the other autobiographies being written during the time. His novel sold well and silenced many arguments of anti-abolitionist.
