9 apr 1865 anni - General Robert E. Lee Surrenders to General Ulysses S. Grant
Descrizione:
On April 9, 1865, the American Civil War came to an end for General Robert E. Lee and his Confederate troops in North Virginia. The fighting, however, still lasted for several more months after the surrender. The meeting took place at the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia and they arranged the surrender. Grant wrote that this day he was joyful about the victory, but his joy was mixed with sadness. He wrote in his memoirs “I felt like anything rather than rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause, though that cause was, I believe, one of the worst for which a people ever fought, and one for which there was the least excuse.” This shows how Grant respected the perseverance of Lee. The terms of the surrender were very generous, allowing the Confederates to return home in peace, keep their weapons and horses, and even went as far as giving some hungry Confederate soldiers food. After four long and bloody years, the Civil War was officially over, changing the history of the United States forever. Creating America.
