The coal strike was the background the February election. However Heath focused more on inflation and standing up to strikers. A Pay Board argued that the miners were paid less than comparable employees in other industries. This did little for the governments case. Labour won 301 seats and Conservatives won 297 seats.
Labour had a majority a majority of 3.
