Anne Hutchison was one of the earliest American Feminists. She was a spiritual leader in colonial Massachusetts, and consistently tried to challenge the male authority, and gender roles in the society. This later led to her getting kicked out. One of the main causes of this was because they believed it was a violation of Puritan doctrine and church structure. The effects were the establishment of Portsmouth, and the first public fight for woman's rights and religious freedom.
