The Russo-Japanese was a brief war that grew out of imperial competition. Russia had made gains on Manchuria and was eyeing northern Korea, which caused conflict with Japan. Nicholas II ignored their diplomatic protests and the Japanese launched a surprise attack on a Russian naval base in northern China, Port Arthur. The Russo-Japanese War lasted less than a year and ended in a distinctive Japanese victory.
