Charles does not die at this point but he does fall ill and in the response to his he sends Monmouth (Charles 1st illegal child) to France and sends James to Scotland

this was clever just in case he did die James would know of the king's death first and would more easily be able to get to London in time than Monmouth which would try and overthrow the government for his rule at this time James would theoretically already be king of England
