8 giug 1866 anni - 14th Amendment

Descrizione:

This amendment gave former slaves (and everyone else who was born or naturalized in U.S. jurisdictions) citizenship.

It declared that states cannot make laws that violate a person’s privileges or immunities. It also declared that states cannot deprive anyone of life, liberty, or property without due process and that states must give each person equal protection of the laws.

In section two, it got rid of the three-fifths rule. In section three, it states that any officiers or officials that helped the confederacy cannot hold any public office (unless ⅔ of Congress voted otherwise).

Section four allows state and federal governments to refuse to pay war debts of the Confederate army, and it allows them to refuse to pay claims about the emancipation of slaves.

Section five gives Congress the power to enforce this amendment.

The major significance of this amendment is that it gave African Americans citizenship, it makes all citizens equal before the law, and it protects life, liberty, or property rights. It would play important roles in historical cases such as Brown v Board of Education, Loving v. Virginia, Roe v. Wade, and Obergefell v. Hodges.
