26 dic 1991 anni - Dissolution
of the
USSR
Descrizione:
Gorbachev’s rival Boris Yeltsin was a radical reform Communist who was elected parliamentary leader of the Russian Soviet Republic. He declared Russia’s independence from the Soviet Union. Gorbachev tried to save the Soviet Union with a treaty that would link the members in a looser, freely accepted confederation, to no avail. The leaders of an attempted coup against Gorbachev hoped to preserve Communist power, state ownership, and the multinational Soviet Union. In a historic moment, Yeltsin stood on a tank, denounced the coup, and declared the “rebirth of Russia”.
An anticommunist revolution swept Russia as Yeltsin and his supporters outlawed the Communist Party and confiscated its property. All USSR countries left the Soviet Union, and the Russian Federation was formed. Gorbachev resigned on Christmas Day 1991, and the Soviet Union dissolved.
